RPM, not CPM, is what you earn
Advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions (CPM), but YouTube keeps a share and not every view shows an ad. RPM (revenue per mille) is what you receive per 1,000 views after YouTube's cut, across all views, and it's the number that matters. You'll find it in YouTube Studio under Analytics → Revenue. Indian audiences generally produce lower RPMs than audiences in the US or UK, and RPM varies hugely by niche. Finance, tech and business content usually earns far more per view than entertainment or vlogs.
That's why this calculator asks for your RPM instead of guessing one. If you're not monetised yet, use a cautious figure and treat the result as a rough range.
Ad income = long-form views ÷ 1,000 × RPM + Shorts views ÷ 1,000 × Shorts RPM
Total = ad income + sponsored videos × rateWorked example
Why sponsorships matter more than views
For most Indian creators, brand deals, affiliate links and their own products earn more than AdSense. A channel with 20,000 highly engaged subscribers in a specific niche (personal finance, baking, tech reviews) can often command better sponsorship rates than a much larger general channel. Track your income sources separately; the split above shows how dependent you are on ads.
Eligibility and tax
- YouTube Partner Programme: check YouTube's current thresholds for subscribers and watch hours or Shorts views before monetisation.
- US tax withholding: YouTube may withhold US tax on revenue from US viewers unless you submit your tax info in AdSense; the India–US treaty can reduce the rate.
- Indian income tax: YouTube income is business or professional income. Many creators use presumptive taxation and must pay advance tax.
- GST: export of services (payments from Google) is generally zero-rated, but registration rules depend on your total turnover, including Indian sponsorships.
