What a GST invoice must include
If you're registered under GST, every taxable sale needs a tax invoice with specific details. This generator lays them out for you. The main requirements:
- Your name, address and GSTIN.
- A unique, consecutive invoice number (up to 16 characters) for the financial year, and the date.
- The customer's name and address, and their GSTIN if they're registered (B2B).
- HSN code for goods or SAC code for services, quantity, rate and taxable value.
- GST rate and amount, split into CGST and SGST for sales within your state, or IGST for sales to another state.
- Place of supply, and the total in figures and words, with a signature.
CGST + SGST or IGST?
Sales within your state charge CGST and SGST, each at half the GST rate: 18% becomes 9% + 9%. Sales to a customer in another state charge IGST at the full rate. Choose the right option at the top of the form and the invoice shows the correct split automatically.
Taxable value = Σ quantity × rate
GST per line = taxable value × GST %
Total = taxable value + GSTNot registered for GST?
Leave the GSTIN fields empty and set items to 0% GST. The document becomes a simple Invoice instead of a Tax Invoice, which is fine for small businesses below the registration threshold. You must not charge GST if you aren't registered.
Good invoicing habits
- Number invoices in sequence and don't skip numbers. "Start a new invoice" moves to the next number automatically.
- Keep copies for at least 6 years (72 months) from the due date of the annual return for that year.
- Check e-invoicing: businesses above the notified turnover limit must generate e-invoices through the government portal (IRP), and this simple tool doesn't do that.
- Add payment details: a UPI ID or bank details in the notes gets you paid faster.
